Big tiles show up a bad floor, so it gets checked, levelled and decoupled before anything is laid. Natural stone gets sealed before grouting, or the grout stains the face of the tile.
Then the set-out: where the cuts land, and whether the pattern centres on the room or on the door. That gets decided before the first tile goes down.
